Hands on heaven
Have students create a Diigo account. Give time for students to explore Diigo.
METS-S/NETS-T
Use information and communication technology tools to collect, organize, and evaluate information to assist with solving problems (3-5.CT.2).
Essential Questions:
How can 21 Century tools be used to help your career?
Objectives:
Work with EDU346 students to explore, create and refine their personal brand.
Tools and Resources:
Teacher provided websites, Computer and Internet, New Black PPT
Rationale:
If you don’t brand yourself, someone else will, and the outcome might not be so favorable. Branding yourself keeps you current in your field, opens doors for you, and creates a lasting impression on potential and existing clients. By developing your own brand, you’ll have control over the initial perception people have of you.
Who was your favorite teacher in High School? Why? Would you say that is that teacher's brand? When you hear the term branding, what come to mind?
Board activity: What do you know about branding? Include initials.
Body of Lesson Plan: Segment #1 (Artifact: link to real world, website, book, picture, etc.)
The teacher will write one 21 century tool (Twitter, Blog, Wiki, Facebook, Video, Diigo, Google+, Podcast) on a white board and have students list (by initial) what they know about the tool.
Segment #2 (Factual information/Vocab Includes sample feedback loop)
Going to the website and using hyperlinks will be emphasized. The teacher will ask a student to participate in a self directed exercise to gather information. The following questions will be asked, possible students responses are italics.
What comes to mind when you hear the term branding?
(Burning a logo into an animal) LOL, you are partially right, that is one way to use the concept, but there is much more available.
What causes us to make a determination of a person's character? (Joe is a liar)
(Spending time with them) Correct, why do you think that helps us make determinations about a person? (We getto see how they act in many situations over time)
How would you go about creating a personal brand?
(Trial and error) That is one way to learn, but the best way is to research the process and find examples.
Do you know how to create, refine and maintain your brand?
(never really thought about it) Exactly, most people never take the opportunity to think about how they want others to perceive them and then deliver on that desire.
Introducing the BRANDING project, students need to understand and utilize the technology that is readily available to them. To prepare the students for this process use the following prompt:
Imagine that you are one of 30 applicants for 2 job openings, what can you do to make yourself stand out? What if you wanted to direct the perspective employer to information about you before meeting you?
